ok so recently my car will not hold a charge. i have to jump start it every morning before work. they tested it at auto zone and said the battery tested ok and the alternator was over charging (140 i think amps?) but after completely replacing the alternator its still doing it. its fine if im driving but when i hit my brakes or turn on my turn signal it drains the battery really fast and i have to floor it to charge back up. my bright light completely kill the car as soon as i hit the switch. and my dome lights keep staying on..i cant get them off..also when i hit my turn signal all the lights in the car flash with them. today we found a slice in the battery cable. it was pretty bad but we fixed it as best as we could and taped it tightly… any suggestions as to what this could be? i deliver pizzas and need a decent running car. its a 1996 pontiac bonneville se..it has the 3800 if that matters. i wasted money on the alternator so i dont want to buy a new bat unless i know thats it

i had it tested at auto zone and everything checked out. the alternator and battery both checked out ok in the test. they said it was probably my voltage regulator. i had it then tested at another shop and they to said it was the voltage regulator.
since it is not my car my parents then took it in to there favorite shop on the other side of town and they put a whole new alternator in.
the bill came up as 550$
the highest price i can find for an alternator for my car is 150$
anyone else think i am getting screwed?

3 comments »Does it really make a difference on the name of the place you go and get your vehicle parts? Say you are getting a twin turbo put in or just buying a part to upgrade a certian engine. Prices are a factor as well..install etc. Auto Zone and Advanced Auto parts all seemed to do well…..what about another competitor on the field?What would you want and what would be popular to you?
